Great Lakes Region puts on a Great workshop

Numbers are hard to read. I think I’ve fallen asleep on my Statistics book twice as often as on Chemistry. But, I must admit that sometimes numbers read clearer than words. Take, for example, the numbers that Cathy Leslie, Executive Director of EWB-USA, gave at last weekend’s EWB-Great Lakes Regional Workshop in Chicago. Cathy opened the conference with the fact that in the past five years EWB-USA has grown from 2 members in Colorado to over 250 chapters around the country. Statistically, EWB is the fastest growing engineering organization in the world. It’s expected that in another five years EWB will have touched the lives of over 5 million people – and that’s not including the way it’ll change the lives of members themselves.
During the EWB-Great Lakes workshop we heard from several insightful speakers, including members of other EWB student and professional chapters, and even got the chance to practice mixing concrete the way it’s done in developing countries. Probably the best part of the conference, though, was the chance to interact with EWB members from other chapters. Advice was exchanged and friendships were formed. This workshop really emphasized just how much we can learn from each other, and I’d encourage all of you to search out another EWB chapter if you’re looking for advice or collaboration.
This year’s International Conference will be in Seattle in the spring, and all EWB-UW members are welcome. There may not be Chicago deep-dish this time around, but at events like this, weight is the least of what you stand to gain.
Presentations from the conference will be posted on the EWB-USA website: http://www.ewb-usa.org/
